![]() Queens Falcons Fly High With Five Teams In Action Facing Brooklyn, Lynvett Squads The 2005 Queens Falcons Football Season is in mid season with five out of our six teams in gridiron action this past Sundays competing in the NYC Warner Football Conference and Brooklyn Patriot League for the 17-19 year old Juniors. Intramural Action: Saturdays at Juniper Valley Park on the grass field In addition to our Warner Conference schedule of Sunday games, On Saturdays, (10 a.m. and noon) the QF’s host a Lynvett intramural team (their JV and varsity) for two non conference games. Last Saturday, the Lynvett Packers played our Jr. Pee Wee team at noon. These intramural games give the younger and inexperienced players an opportunity to play and gain valuable experience and fun in game situations that they won’t get in the Sunday Warner Conference games. The Brooklyn Skyhawks blanked the Queens Falcons as they defeated the QF’s in all five division match ups over the past two weeks. Peanut (7-8): Coaches Frank, Nick and Manny are preparing the Peanuts for this weekend game against a Lynvett in house team. If any seven or eight year olds still want to sign up, Peanut registration is open all year round. Jr. Pee Wee (9-10): Coaches Winces, Joe & Mike keep working hard with their group of Falcons giving their best effort to date with a tough 8-6 loss to the Brooklyn Skyhawks they remain winless falling to the first place Bayside Raiders. The light at the end of the tunnel is that the Falcons are guaranteed a fourth place finish and will make the playoffs. Pee Wee (9-10): The Pee Wees traveled to the Parade grounds even though their bus broke down on the way to the game and suffered a tough 14-0 victory. The game was a one score game until late in the fourth quarter. Coach Jim and Pete stated that the guys gave a great performance and will need to get a victory to finish in the final playoff spot. Midget (13-14): After the previous week’s 16-14 victory over the two time defending champion Lynvett Cardinals, the Brooklyn Skyhawks came to Juniper Valley Park for a mid-October showdown. Special teams played a deciding factor in the outcome of the game as the Skyhawks took the opening kick off and returned it 40 yards to the Falcon 25-yard line, and subsequently scored to take a 6-0 lead on the opening drive of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter the Falcons mounted a scoring drive with #43 Yian Ayerbe, scoring from four yards out to tie the game at 6-6. The point after conversion was no good as #32 Saadig Samuels was stopped short of the goal line. Late in the first half the Falcons had an opportunity to take the lead, but turned the football over deep in Skyhawks territory. In the second half, the Falcons received the kickoff deep in their end of the field and went three and out, which gave the Skyhawks the momentum and the field position, when #7 busted an off-tackle run left 35 yards for the go-ahead and ultimately the winning score; the PAT was good, giving the Skyhawks the 14-6 lead. The Falcons rallied in the fourth quarter and drove down to the Skyhawks 20-yard line before three successive penalties and a sack brought the ball back to mid field where the Skyhawks defense dug in and stopped the Falcons pass attack with two consecutive sacks to win the game. Intermediates (15-16): The QF intermediates hosted the first place Lynvett Cardinals, who remained undefeated with a 10-0 victory on Brennan field. The Falcons fumbled the ball four times in Lynvett territory, according to Head Coach Tim Cavanaugh. Juniors (17-19): The “Big Guys” opened the season with a 14-6 loss to Springfield. Run To Daylight Education Update The Run To Daylight Education Program and Foundation strives to introduce our student athletes to the varied public, parochial, private and or boarding school opportunities in New York City and the northeastern United States. Our goal is to provide our student athletes with the best opportunity to succeed based on their academic ability. Currently, 19 former Queens Falcons student athletes are attending New England prep schools and receive financial aids packages collectively in excess of $2 million for their secondary school education. This does not include the many who attend NYC public schools and NYC Catholic high schools such as Holy Cross, Christ the King and St Francis Prep, to name a few. This week’s Run To Daylight Education Event Last Sunday, many of our student athletes spent Sunday taking the private entrance examinations for Brooklyn Tech, Regis and Bronx Science. The Secondary School Aptitude Test is upcoming for entrance into the local and northeast boarding schools. On Oct. 15, many of the Midget and Intermediate players watched Holy Cross H.S. come up short 31-21 against four time defending champion St. Anthony’s.
